The Worshipful Company of Cooks

In loving memory of Lieutenant Gordon Noll RN (1918-43), a proud submariner, captain of HMS Untamed.

Gordon’s widow Diana Mayes and her family and Gordon’s nieces and nephews are pleased to support the Submariner Memorial Appeal, helping create a memorial to submariners who have lost their lives in the service and to the sacrifice of their families.

They are glad to have this opportunity to remember and acknowledge the bravery and fortitude of the crew of HMS Untamed, lost with all hands during a training exercise in the Clyde on 30th May 1943.  Thirty six men, mainly still in their twenties, dear to their family and friends, lost before their time in service to the country, still remembered and missed.

‘O Valiant Hearts…your memory hallowed in the land you loved’  (quotation from the hymn The Supreme Sacrifice, taken from words written by Sir John Stanhope Arkwright, father of Able Seaman John Arkwright, member of the crew of HMS Untamed).

As the three nieces of Sub. Lieutenant Clement Cottrell serving on HMS G9 – Jenny Kirkham, Clare Tolson and Lucy Abrams – we are donating to the Submariner Memorial Fund in Memory of our uncle and the crew members of HMS G9.Our Uncle, aged 19, and all but one of the thirty-one crew members were lost with the sinking of HMS G9 on 16th September 1917 some 70 miles NW of Bergen.
